Best Neutral Running Shoes

Brooks Ghost 12 Shark/Violet/Bel Air Blue 7.5 B (M)

When we saw how well this running shoe from Brooks was selling, we just had to see what all the fuss was about.

Judging from Amazon’s rating system, they sold well over 2,000 of these shoes, and better yet the customer feedback has been super positive, with the average Amazon customer rating coming out at a very nice 4 and a half stars out of 5.

It’s specifically designed for neutral support, and has just the right amount of cushioning.  It uses Brook’s special Brooks’ BioMoGo DNA and DNA LOFT technology to provide protective cushion to every step, but still has a nice bouncy responsiveness.

There’s also an integrated shock absorption system, much helped by the outsole’s segmented crash pads.

For your smooth heel-to-toe transitions, there’s also Brook’s 3D Fit Print tech, for strategically placed stretch and structure as you bend your foot.

There’s a huge color selection to choose from, including all those really sporty looks you can get.  There are also some nice one-color options that you could wear with anything.  But the color option we really love are the plaid/checkered varieties - super cool.

The other thing that’s good about it is the size range - you’ve got all the sizes in there from size 6 all the way up to 12, including half sizes and wide sizes.

  • An Amazon bestseller

  • Great customer feedback

  • Soft & responsive cushioning

  • Shock absorption system

  • Smooth transitions

  • Great color options & styles

  • Customers say that the sizes run small

ASICS Men's Gel-Nimbus 22 Shoes, 6M, Glacier Grey/Graphite Grey

This is a great little running shoe from Asics.

It’s specifically built for those with neutral gait (or mild underpronation).  And there’s a lot of tech gone into making it such a good running shoe.

First off there’s Asics’ own GEL® technology in the rearfoot area, which not only provides cushioning but also helps with shock absorption at the impact phase, before allowing a smooth heel to toe transition.

But that’s not the only tech incorporated.  There’s also the FlyteFoam tech which gives it that nice bounce back and responsiveness.  And then there’s the High Abrasion Rubber outsole, which makes it a durable shoe no matter what terrain you go running in.

And that’s not all.  The Gel-Nimbus 22 comes complete with it’s own Ortholite sockliner, which provides an extra layer of cushioning underfoot, and gives a better rebound.  Better yet though, it’s also really breathable and wicks any sweat away.

The color range is quite broad, with 15 different options to choose from.  Amongst them is a high visibility option, which is great if you go running in low light, it’s the Safety Yellow/Electric Blue one.

The size range too is rather broad, starting at 6 and going to 15, including half sizes, wide sizes, and even extra wide sizes.

  • Built for neutral runners

  • Asics’ own GEL® technology

  • Shock absorption

  • Ortholite sockliner

  • Smooth transitions

  • Many striking color options

  • Available in wide and extra wide

  • It’s not Asic’s most cushioned running shoe

Nike Womens Air Zoom Pegasus 37 Casual Running Shoe Bq9647-003 Size 5.5

Now, here’s a brand you’ll most certainly have heard of.  Nike have been doing their thing and doing it well for many decades now, and this shoe, one of their newer models makes for a great neutral running shoe.

The downside to buying from such a big brand however is that they can afford to set their own price point - and this pair cost over $100, even at the smaller sizes.  But read on though, you might decide they’re worth it.

This shoe is actually from Nike’s best selling lines, and when you look at it you can see that the outsole and midsole is far thicker than what you see in their counterparts, and it turns up more at the heel for a better foot impact as you run.  You can just imagine the comfort before you even try them on!

The shoe’s midsole has been upgraded to the React foam cushion which is both super bouncy and really durable to boot.

The unit in the forefoot is also upgraded to be twice as thick as the previous version and designed to give greater rebound right where you want it.

What we love about this shoe is just how springy and lightweight it is.

The link above should take you to the Amazon page, and you may notice that only one color option is featured.  And it’s a nice color option if you ask us, sporty without looking garish.

But it’s worth noting at this point that Nike has other color options in this shoe available on separate Amazon pages.

  • Excellent, well established brand

  • Best selling line for Nike

  • New upgraded version

  • Half sizes available

  • Plenty of cushion

  • Plenty of bounce

  • Not available in wide sizes

  • Premium product at a premium price

  • Only available in one color option on this Amazon page

  • There aren’t many peer reviews for this product just yet, because it only became available in June 2020

Saucony Women's S10595-40 Triumph 18 Running Shoe, Charcoal/Sky - 8 M US

The Triumph 18 is Saucony’s most cushioned shoe, thank to it’s underfoot PWRRUN+ cushioning, which is the next generation of springy, luxurious cushioning.

Even the rubber outsole is new, designed to make the shoe feel faster when you run.  And to that end, the midsole geometry has also been improved, for snappier transitions.

The shoe also uses FORMFIT which is what makes it feel so snug to wear.  And the engineered mesh upper, complete with 3D-printed overlays is what provides it flexibility as your foot moves through the gait cycle.

In fact, Saucony uses premium fabrics and textiles throughout the whole shoe, to provide that all over luxurious feel.

The link above should take you to the Amazon page, and you may notice that only one color option is featured.  And it’s a nice color option if you ask us, sporty without looking garish.  The downside however is that that seems to be the only color option available on Amazon.

The size options start at 7 and go up as far as 10, and there are half sizes available, but sadly not wide sizes.

  • Great well established brand

  • Redesigned for snappier transitions

  • FORMFIT for snug wearing

  • Flexible mesh upper

  • Nice color and look

  • The size options are quite limited

  • Premium product at a premium price

  • There only seems to be one color option on available Amazon

Best neutral running shoes - Buying Guide

OK, so now we’ve looked at what we think are the best neutral running shoes out on the market today, let's go over all the different things you might want to think about before you buy.

But before we go any further, there’s 2 important questions we need to address.

What’s the difference between a neutral and a support running shoe?

Neutral running shoes are designed for runners who put excessive tension on the forefoot and rear foot as they run.  These shoes are designed to help absorb the shock and keep you running comfortably.

Support shoes, also known as stability shoes, on the other hand are for those who show overpronation, and are designed to help bring the foot to its natural alignment.

Do I need a neutral or support running shoe?”

This comes down to whether you overpronate or underpronate.  In order to tell whether you do either, take a gander at the sole of your shoes.

If most of the wear is on the inside sole near the ball of the foot and near the big toe, then there’s a good possibility that you overpronate.  If you have a wear pattern on the outer edge of your shoe however, then this could be a sign that you’re underpronating (also called supinating).

If your feet don't pronate excessively, a neutral running shoe will offer the most appropriate level of support.

There is a reason why there are running shoe brands that you’ve already heard of or been recommended.  And it’s not just because of their big marketing budgets.  Brands don’t become big household names without having a good quality product to back it up.

In our Top 5 picks we picked running shoes from some of the bestelling brands in the US.  If you’re going to go for regular runs, you’ll need running shoes that are both durable and comfortable.

As to which brand is the best, we think it’s very hard to say to be honest.  They all have a lot going for them, and their price points are more or less at a very similar level.

If you already know of a good brand which offers all the comfort and durability that you want in a running shoe, then there’s no real need to divert to something else, unless you particularly fancy a change.

Price Point

Have you ever heard the phrase “Buy cheap, buy twice”?  This refers to a common situation whereby if you were to buy an inferior product, it will soon get damaged due to it’s inferior quality, and you will then have to buy a new product to replace it.  Well, that applies to running shoes too.

The best quality running shoes, whether for those neutral gait or otherwise, generally come from big name brands.  Cheaper alternatives may well fit your foot and serve as a good casual shoe, but if you take your running seriously, it is our view that it’s really worth investing in the best running shoe that you can afford.

Fashions change, trends come and go, but quite often tastes remain pretty much the same.

All of the neutral running shoes in our Top 5 picks are top quality, and are made with the best possible technology and materials.  So to be honest, which one is best for you mainly comes down to your personal tastes.

Several of the ranges we have given you the links for are available in a variety of different styles, some really bright and funky, and some more subtle or subdued.

The branded shoes we showed you earlier all feature their brand’s logo.  We would argue that these logos look quite sleek and modern on the shoe, but if you didn’t want them to stand out so much you could opt for one with one all over color so it blends into the rest of the upper.

Before you go ahead and buy your next running shoe, we can’t stress enough how important it is to know your shoe size.  And if you’re ever looking to get a running shoe from a brand that you haven’t bought from before it is most definitely worth checking out their size charts first.

Some brands don’t always sell half sizes or wider sizes, so if that’s also something to think about if that applies to you.

It’s worth noting at this point that many experts recommend buying running shoes half a size bigger than your regular shoes.  This is because if your running shoe is too tight, you may end up with blisters, numbness, or general discomfort.

Unfortunately for some, the size of the shoe usually affects the cost price.

Durable Outsole

When you’re running your shoes are hitting the boardwalk again and again with your body weight.  So you need to invest in running shoes that are designed to last.  Much of this comes down the outsole.

The best outsoles are rubber ones, because they are flexible enough to bend without cracking, and at the same time shock absorbing to disperse the impact of the foot on the ground throughout the shoe.

Breathability & Moisture Wicking

Running shoes can sometimes get a little sweaty.  But the good news is that there’s technology in today’s running shoe to help deal with that.  A good running shoe will have a breathable upper.

Some running shoes take breathability a step further and are lined with fabric that’s designed to wick your sweat away, dispersing it from your foot.

Cushioning & Responsiveness

Ideally you’ll want some cushioning in every step of your run, and you’ll also want some bounce in it too.  That’s where midsoles and insoles come in.

The shoes in our Top 5 picks all feature decent cushioning and responsiveness.
